West Africa: A Journey of Culinary Heritage and Identity" Key Takeaways Season 2 Teaser Episode 4
In the fourth episode of Cooking Back to Our Roots, we were honored to host two profoundly inspiring guest speakers, Dr. Marcia Goddard and Kemo Camara.
This episode was an empowering exploration of West Africa and its rich cultural and culinary heritage, which we approached through the lens of Sankofa—an African philosophy that emphasizes the importance of learning from the past to build a successful future.
The conversation was not just about cooking; it was a profound journey that connected us back to our roots, instilling a deep appreciation for our shared heritage. Throughout the episode, we delved into the significant influence of Dutch slavery history on the African Diaspora in the Netherlands.
We explored how this complex history has shaped contemporary culinary practices and food cultures within the African diaspora community.
Both Dr. Goddard, a renowned neuroscientist, and Kemo Camara, a community expert, offered unique insights into the interplay between food, culture, history, and identity. Their perspectives illuminated the intricate connections between our ancestors' experiences and our present-day practices.
This episode served as a powerful reminder that food is more than sustenance—it's a vibrant thread that weaves together our collective histories, identities, and stories.

Cooking Back to Our Roots Featured in Yahoo Finance
I am excited to share that the heartfelt initiative, "Cooking Back to Our Roots," has gained international recognition and has been featured on several prestigious news platforms, including Yahoo Finance!
This incredible journey began with the inspiration I drew from my beloved Grandma Maame's kitchen. It was there that I first experienced the magic of traditional cooking and the narratives it carries.
My passion for culinary history was further fueled by the enlightening books of Dr. Jessica B Harris, a respected American culinary historian, college professor, cookbook author, and journalist.
The invaluable insights I gained from renowned American food chef and writer Stephen Satterfield have also been instrumental in shaping this project.
Earlier this year, Dutch King Willem-Alexander made a profound apology for the Dutch involvement in the slave trade. His sincere gesture resonated deeply with me, reminding us all of the power of reconciliation, healing, and the importance of acknowledging past wrongs.
With "Cooking Back to Our Roots," our commitment is to contribute to a world where respect, value, and equal opportunities are not just ideals but everyday realities. Through the universal language of food, we strive to celebrate cultural diversity, promote understanding, and cultivate an environment where everyone is empowered to thrive.
